Indonesia prioritizes downstreaming in investment cooperation with US

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that the Indonesian government continues to prioritize its industrial downstreaming program in its investment cooperation with the United States.“We want raw materials to be processed locally. If they want to mine here, they have to process here,” he said, as quoted in an official statement from the Indonesian Government Communications Agency in Jakarta on Sunday.Prabowo stressed that openness to foreign capital must remain aligned with national interests. Despite ongoing discussions regarding tariff agreements with the United States, he said all investments must comply with Indonesia’s existing natural resource management regulations.Regarding the management of critical minerals, the president highlighted the importance of applying international market prices. He underlined that Indonesia is not closing access to foreign parties seeking to enter its mining sector, as long as they adhere to government regulations.“Regarding critical minerals, I have said that we are open. But everything at market price. At economic price,” he asserted.Furthermore, the president explained that foreign involvement in Indonesia’s extractive sector is a long-standing practice, citing the operations of PT Freeport Indonesia, which has been active in the country for decades, as an example.According to him, the company has become a significant contributor to state revenue after complying with existing regulations, as Indonesia granted the operating permit on the condition that it continues to provide added value to the country’s economy.Despite its openness, the Indonesian government strictly bans the export of raw materials that have not undergone processing within the country. This downstreaming principle is maintained to ensure that strategic commodities such as critical minerals can deliver maximum economic value to the Indonesian people.
