Indonesia set to finalise e-commerce rule revision

e-commerce ecosystem must be healthyJakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia aims to complete revisions of its e-commerce regulations this week as the government seeks tighter oversight of online marketplaces and stronger protection for sellers and consumers, Trade Minister Budi Santoso said on Monday. The Ministry of Trade is finalising inter-agency harmonisation of amendments to Trade Minister Regulation Number 31 of 2023 on electronic commerce, while accelerating consultations with sellers and digital marketplace operators.”E-commerce is still in harmonisation, at least one more round this week. Harmonisation has only been held several times,” Santoso told reporters in Jakarta. He said the ministry would summon merchants and marketplace platforms for talks aimed at speeding completion of the revised regulation, which he said reflected a joint commitment to strengthen governance across Indonesia’s digital trade ecosystem. The new rules are intended to protect all parties involved in online commerce, including sellers, platform operators, and consumers, as Indonesia’s fast-growing digital economy faces mounting calls for fairer market practices.”The e-commerce ecosystem must be healthy because it involves sellers, platforms, and consumers. All three must be protected. Tomorrow, I will meet them,” Santoso said. One key of the revision would require greater transparency over fees charged by e-commerce platforms to merchants, addressing long-standing concerns over unclear deductions and pricing structures. The government is also pushing digital platforms to prioritise promotion of domestically made products, including goods produced by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).Marketplace operators would also be required to provide complaint-handling services with clear service level agreements (SLAs) to ensure faster resolution of disputes involving buyers and sellers. The revised framework is intended to create a more balanced relationship between merchants and platform operators while strengthening consumer protection in Indonesia’s expanding digital marketplace.
