Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia is strengthening its position as a trusted destination for green investment through the implementation of the Carbon Unit Registration System (SRUK), Environment Minister and Environmental Control Agency Head Muhammad Jumhur Hidayat said.In a press release issued in Jakarta on Friday, Jumhur described SRUK as a key instrument for strengthening the credibility of Indonesia's carbon market by enabling the country to accurately measure carbon emissions reduction efforts.”By establishing a registry system that is transparent, interoperable, and backed by legal certainty, Indonesia is strengthening its position as a credible destination for green investment,” he said.SRUK is a national carbon registry designed to enhance transparency, regulatory certainty, and market integrity.According to Jumhur, the system provides greater certainty for investors and market participants by ensuring that carbon credits are fully traceable, ownership is clearly established, transactions are properly recorded, and safeguards are in place to prevent double counting.”Through this governance framework, Indonesia is not only strengthening the achievement of its Nationally Determined Contribution targets, but also sending a strong message to the world,” he said.He emphasized: “Indonesia stands ready to contribute not only as a provider of high-quality carbon mitigation opportunities, but also as a trusted partner in shaping a credible, transparent, and high-integrity global carbon market.”Jumhur expressed confidence that the system would boost investor confidence in Indonesia's green investment landscape by providing stronger governance and greater regulatory certainty for carbon projects.Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly Eddy Soeparno underscored the importance of strengthening Indonesia's carbon market regulations and governance to unlock the country's carbon economy potential. He said the carbon economy could contribute up to US$21.3 billion to Indonesia's economy by 2030, providing an important source of climate financing while creating demand that supports green jobs, attracts investment, and strengthens domestic manufacturing.”This gives us a new source of financing for our decarbonization efforts without relying on the state budget, allowing public funds to be allocated to priorities such as healthcare and social protection,” he said.Launched on July 9, SRUK records the entire lifecycle of Indonesia's carbon units—from project registration, issuance, transfer of ownership, and trading to retirement—covering climate mitigation activities across sectors. The system serves as the single source of truth for Indonesia's Carbon Economic Value (Nilai Ekonomi Karbon/NEK).Whenever a transaction takes place on the Carbon Exchange, SRUK automatically updates the ownership and status of carbon units, trading volume, and their intended use. This ensures consistency between the Carbon Exchange and the government's registry.Built in line with international standards for carbon registries, SRUK is supported by blockchain technology developed in collaboration with IDX Carbon to strengthen data integrity.
