Indonesia urges China to expand investment in AI, high-tech

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia's Ambassador to China Djauhari Oratmangun urged Chinese companies to move beyond traditional sectors and invest in artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing, green energy and automation to strengthen future economic resilience.Speaking to representatives of 27 Chinese companies at the Indonesia-China Partnership Forum in Jakarta on Thursday, he said technological innovation would drive future economic transformation.“The future of the economy will be determined by artificial intelligence, smart manufacturing, digital industries, green technology, automation and research-based innovation,” Djauhari said.“Indonesia wants to be part of this change—not only as a technology market, but as a productive, innovation and growth partner,” he added.China's capital, manufacturing capabilities and mature supply chains complement Indonesia's natural resources, working-age population and expanding domestic market, Djauhari said.Chinese investment in Indonesia reached US$38.34 billion from 2021 through the first half of 2026, creating more than 500,000 local jobs, Investment Ministry data show. The next phase of bilateral economic ties should prioritize high-quality, sustainable investment that delivers technology transfer, develops local talent and creates domestic added value, Djauhari said.Indonesia is also seeking investment in renewable energy, electric-vehicle supply chains, battery manufacturing and environmentally friendly industrial zones, while offering Chinese companies access to ASEAN's broader market.
