Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia will provide free superior seeds for plantations covering 870,000 hectares nationwide, Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said, as President Prabowo Subianto seeks to boost plantation productivity.The program targets key commodities including coconut, sugarcane, cocoa, coffee, cashew, nutmeg and pepper, aligning with the president’s agricultural priorities.Speaking during an inspection of a 15-hectare state-run coconut nursery in Batang, Central Java, Amran said seed distribution will reflect local agro-climates and farming practices.“This is a priority program for the President. Our total target for the main commodities is 870,000 hectares across Indonesia, and the seeds are being distributed free of charge,” Amran said Thursday.“We prioritize areas with suitable agro-climates and communities already cultivating the commodity,” he said, citing traditional coconut-growing areas and regions near sugar mills.The ministry’s Batang nursery has a six-hectare mother plantation for seed production and a three-hectare nursery zone, currently holding more than 25,000 coconut saplings.The facility cultivates two-hectare plots of Kebumen Entog Dwarf, Pandan Wangi Dwarf and Bido Dwarf coconut varieties.The site is also preparing 25,196 coconut plants in polybags for distribution, including Bali Dwarf, Bojong Bulat Dwarf, Kebumen Entog Dwarf and brown, green and yellow Kopyor varieties.The Agriculture Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to expanding public access to quality planting materials to support long-term agricultural sustainability.“As long as communities need them, we will continue distributing seeds. We will support anyone who meets the criteria to increase national plantation productivity,” Amran said.The program is part of the government’s broader effort to improve plantation productivity by matching superior planting materials with suitable growing conditions and established farming communities.
