Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto ordered state utility PT PLN to shut down diesel-fired power plants with 13 gigawatts (GW) of capacity and replace them with non-fossil energy.Speaking at the inauguration of the National Electric Motorcycle initiative in Bekasi, West Java, on Thursday, Prabowo said Indonesia must reduce fuel imports to achieve energy self-sufficiency.Indonesia currently spends about US$28 billion to US$30 billion annually on fuel imports, Prabowo said, underscoring the economic cost of dependence on overseas energy supplies.“We must not depend on foreign energy. We are too large a nation to rely on external parties,” Prabowo said.He said dependence on imported fuel leaves Indonesians exposed to global oil-price shocks triggered by trade disputes and regional conflicts, even when Indonesia is not directly involved.“We are constantly haunted by this, and it must stop!” he said.Indonesia has abundant alternative energy resources that are cleaner than fossil fuels, including solar power, according to Prabowo.“It turns out there is an abundance of clean energy,” Prabowo said, citing discoveries by Indonesian scientists and researchers, as well as the country’s potential natural hydrogen reserves.The president said achieving energy independence would strengthen Indonesia’s economic position and reduce its vulnerability to external shocks.“If we explore further, it does not take long to realize that Indonesia holds tremendous power,” Prabowo said, citing its vast natural resources.To maximize that potential, Prabowo set a target of installing 100 GW of solar power capacity over the next four years, accelerating the country’s clean-energy transition.“For this year alone, our target is 30 gigawatts,” Prabowo said.
