Key food commodities in surplus ahead of Eid: Agriculture Minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said Indonesia holds a surplus of key food commodities ahead of the 2026 Eid al-Fitr holiday, assuring stable supplies and prices during the peak consumption period. In a statement on Monday, Sulaiman said national rice stocks have reached about 3.5 million tons and are expected to rise further as the main harvest season peaks. Rice production has increased by around 15 percent as of March, he added.“If this trend continues through the end of the month, stocks will almost certainly exceed six million tons. That would be the highest level since independence. If the pattern holds until year-end, the potential surplus could reach around nine million tons,” he said.He said overall national food reserves are sufficient to maintain supply and price stability during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, when demand typically surges.Corn stocks also showed strong performance, with availability at 10.751 million tons against demand of 5.899 million tons, resulting in a surplus of 4.852 million tons.Other staples posted surpluses, including consumer sugar at 595,000 tons, large chilies at 74,000 tons and bird’s eye chilies at 105,000 tons.“God willing, basic needs will be secure ahead of the 2026 Eid al-Fitr. Rice, corn and consumer sugar supplies are sufficient; the public does not need to worry,” Sulaiman said.Cooking oil recorded a surplus of 3.556 million tons, while chicken meat, eggs and shallots posted surpluses of 728,000 tons, 349,000 tons and 57,000 tons, respectively.“We have a massive surplus of cooking oil. Chicken and egg stocks are more than adequate. This shows domestic production is strong and capable of meeting national demand, even opening export opportunities,” he said. The minister said the government will continue monitoring production and distribution and strengthening reserves across regions to ensure smooth supply during Ramadan and the Eid holiday period.
