Jakarta (ANTARA) – Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid has urged mobile operators to ensure that biometric SIM card registration is accessible and inclusive, preventing the mandate from becoming a burden on the public.”We are counting on operators to ensure that the policy is implemented while keeping it simple and inclusive to everyone. The goal is to protect mobile network users, not complicate their lives,” she said in Jakarta on Thursday.Meutya stressed that the technology and systems used for biometric verification must accommodate everyone, including persons with disabilities.In this regard, she commended several operators for putting inclusivity into practice, such as providing private booths for female customers who wear hijabs.Apart from the aspect of inclusivity, she urged operators to maintain full compliance with the mandate by ensuring no new user skips the biometric-based registration process.The minister commended all operators for achieving full compliance with the policy's implementation, underscoring the need for on-the-ground monitoring to ensure compliance is maintained across Indonesia.She also emphasized the importance of protecting the public's biometric data, stressing that mobile network operators are not permitted to store customer biometric data, as the entire synchronization process is handled through the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil).”Please ensure that the public's biometric data is secure. Cellular operators do not and must not store biometric data. Everything is synchronized directly with Dukcapil,” she said.Furthermore, Meutya urged operators to establish measurable and transparent monitoring systems to track biometric SIM card registrations and detect potential violations in the field.She also called for stronger collaboration among the government, operators, the Financial Services Authority (OJK), the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), and other stakeholders to foster a secure digital ecosystem.In addition, Meutya stressed that public education must be continuously strengthened so people understand the benefits of biometric registration and feel confident participating in the process.
