Prabowo grants rehabilitation for two teachers sentenced to jail

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto has granted rehabilitation to two civil servant teachers from South Sulawesi who were sentenced to one year in prison for collecting small fees to help pay the wages of honorary teachers. The rehabilitation letter for Abdul Muis and Rasnal, both teachers at SMAN 1 Masamba high school, was signed by President Prabowo in front of them at the VVIP lounge of Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta early Thursday, shortly after he returned from a state visit to Sydney, Australia. After briefly reading the letter, Prabowo immediately signed it, flanked by State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi on his left and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad on his right. The President then greeted Abdul Muis and Rasnal personally, shaking hands with each of them.At the same location, Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad formally announced the President’s decision to grant rehabilitation to the two teachers.“Based on public appeals circulating on social media, Mr. Abdul Muis and Mr. Rasnal were invited to the South Sulawesi Regional House. Later, provincial representatives brought their case to the national House, where we received them,” Ahmad said.“Tonight, after coordinating with the State Secretary, we brought them to Halim to meet the President. The rehabilitation letter for both has now been signed,” he added.State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said he hoped the move would restore the teachers’ dignity and reputation.“This decision reflects justice for our respected teachers and communities across Indonesia,” he said, describing teachers as “heroes without medals” who deserve respect and protection.Abdul Muis and Rasnal were dismissed by the South Sulawesi governor on October 4 and August 21, 2025, respectively, after collecting Rp20,000 (about $1.25) from students’ parents in 2018 to help cover unpaid wages of non-permanent teachers.
