RI seeks energy supply from Russia to fulfill domestic needs: minister

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia is seeking to secure oil and gas supplies from Russia amid constrained global availability due to the Middle East conflict, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said. He noted that Indonesia's domestic energy supply remains insufficient to meet national demand, prompting the government to explore cooperation with major energy producers.Bahlil said President Prabowo Subianto and Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed on long-term energy cooperation.”In the current global situation, we must explore oil reserves from various sources, not just one country. I have also met with our Russian counterparts,” he said at the Presidential Palace complex on Thursday, as quoted In a press release issued on Friday. He added that Russia has expressed readiness to supply crude oil and invest in infrastructure to support Indonesia's energy security. With Indonesia's crude oil demand reaching around 300 million tons per year, he said the country must expand cooperation with global energy producers, including Russia, the United States, and African countries.”The government upholds an independent and active policy, including in the economic sector. We can source supplies from any country as long as we maintain strong partnerships,” Bahlil said.He ensured that Indonesia’s crude oil supply would remain secure through the end of 2026.On Monday, he accompanied Prabowo to meet Putin in Moscow to discuss energy cooperation aligned with national interests. The following day, Bahlil met Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev to follow up on the leaders' discussions. The meeting explored concrete opportunities for immediate cooperation, particularly in securing crude oil and LPG supplies. He noted that Russia had expressed readiness to support Indonesia’s energy security through supply and storage of oil and gas.The cooperation is being pursued through both government-to-government (G2G) and business-to-business (B2B) schemes to ensure the availability of national energy reserves.
