Two Bromo wildfire hotspots expected out by Friday: BNPB

Probolinggo, E Java (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) aims to extinguish the two remaining hotspots from a wildfire at Mount Bromo in East Java’s Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park by Friday.“Of the previous 34 hotspots, only two remain. We aim to extinguish both by Friday (Aug. 14),” BNPB Chief Suharyanto said Tuesday.Suharyanto accompanied Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno to assess the wildfire’s impact and response in the national park.“Three water-bombing aircraft are on standby. Two can later be deployed elsewhere, while one will remain at Bromo until all hotspots are extinguished,” he said.Suharyanto said firefighters face several challenges, including difficult terrain, with hotspots located at elevations and on slopes reaching 80 degrees, preventing ground crews from safely reaching them.“Second, water sources are limited in the park’s savanna. Crews must collect water from Ranu Pani, which is quite far away in Lumajang District,” he said.A third challenge is the weather. Weather modification operations cannot yet be conducted because the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, or BMKG, sees no potential rain clouds.BMKG forecasts potential rain clouds from Aug. 14 to Aug. 16, which could help firefighting if rain falls on the 889 hectares already burned across Probolinggo, Lumajang, Malang and Pasuruan Districts.
