Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia's Trade Minister Budi Santoso announced the reciprocal tariff currently applied by the United States (US) to Indonesia stands at 10 percent.The tariff came from a US investigation conducted under the Section 301 mechanism regarding the issue of forced labor. Previously, Indonesia had been subject to a reciprocal tariff of 18 percent.”At that time, the reciprocal tariff was set at 18 percent. It was then annulled by the Supreme Court; a 10 percent rate was applied to all countries for a period of 150 days,” Minister Santoso said here on Wednesday.Santoso explained the 10 percent tariff applied to all countries was valid for 150 days, ending on July 24, 2026.Following the period, the US government initiated investigations under Section 301 regarding a number of countries concerning two issues, forced labor and excess production.Regarding the forced labor issue, the investigations have been completed, resulting in different tariff rates being imposed on the countries concerned.”Indonesia received the 10 percent rate because we already have an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) in place. Therefore, the rate currently is 10 percent as of July 24,” Santoso added.The previous 18 percent reciprocal tariff set for Indonesia is no longer in effect and has been replaced by the new tariff provisions.Although the 10 percent tariff has been set, Santoso explained the Indonesian government is continuing to seek a lower rate, including the possibility of reducing it to zero percent.”We are striving to secure even better tariff rates,” he said.Indonesia has an advantage over several countries that are still working to obtain an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with the US.Santoso cited Thailand as an example, saying his latest communication with Thai officials indicated they still plan to negotiate the agreement with the US government later this year.”For example, when I met with Thailand (representative) recently, their trade minister said he would only begin discussions with the US toward the end of this year, whereas we have already completed ours,” Santoso noted.
