Tangerang, Banten (ANTARA) – Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the government does not view one automotive technology as competing against another in advancing the transformation of Indonesia's automotive industry.Speaking at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2026 in Tangerang, Banten, on Thursday, Agus said various automotive technologies have equally important roles in achieving the country's emissions reduction targets while strengthening national energy security.”We are not in a position to pit one technology against another. Battery electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, increasingly efficient internal combustion engines, as well as the use of biodiesel and bioethanol, are all pathways toward the same goal: lower emissions and stronger energy security. What we are accelerating is the achievement of that goal,” he said.According to the minister, Indonesia's main challenge is not determining which automotive technology will dominate the market in the future, but ensuring that the domestic industry captures the greatest possible economic benefits from technological developments.To that end, the government continues to strengthen the structure of the national automotive industry to enable it to manufacture more components, increase value added, and expand domestic manufacturing capacity.Agus said that the transition to more environmentally friendly technologies must go hand in hand with deeper industrial development.Without strengthening domestic production capacity, Indonesia would merely shift its dependence from one form of imports to another.”A transition that is not accompanied by deeper industrial development will only shift our dependence from one form of imports to another. That is not transformation,” he said.
