Prabowo urges cleaner Indonesia to boost tourism

Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Prabowo Subianto said Indonesia must become a cleaner, more beautiful, and better-organized country to boost its appeal as a tourist destination and create more jobs through the tourism sector.Speaking at the handover ceremony for 62,000 subsidized home mortgages (KPR) in Batang, Central Java, on Thursday, Prabowo said environmental cleanliness and aesthetics are among the key factors influencing tourists' decisions to visit a destination. He urged regional governments across the country to prioritize maintaining clean and attractive public spaces.”In addition to cleanliness, we must also live in a beautiful environment with good aesthetics. This is one of the main attractions for tourism. Tourism is a major creator of jobs,” Prabowo said, according to a live broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat monitored from Jakarta. The president said tourists would be reluctant to visit destinations plagued by litter and poor environmental management. To accelerate improvements in environmental quality, Prabowo said the government would convene a special meeting with governors and regents/mayors from across Indonesia to discuss the Indonesia ASRI program, an acronym for Safe, Healthy, Clean, and Beautiful. He emphasized that economic development and industrialization must go hand in hand with environmental protection.According to Prabowo, while Indonesia needs to accelerate downstream industrialization and expand its industrial base to support economic transformation, it must do so without compromising environmental sustainability.”We must safeguard all of that; we must secure our energy and other strategic resources. But at the same time, we must protect our environment,” he said.Prabowo expressed hope that the commitment to maintaining clean and beautiful surroundings would evolve into a nationwide movement, making Indonesia a more attractive tourism destination while creating greater employment opportunities through the tourism industry.
