Nine areas in North Sulawesi are at risk of extreme weather: BMKG

Manado (ANTARA) – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned that nine districts and cities in North Sulawesi are at risk of extreme weather.“Based on an analysis of atmospheric dynamics, we are currently monitoring several weather-related phenomena affecting the North Sulawesi region,” said Head of the Sam Ratulangi Meteorological Station in Manado, Dhira Utama, here on Monday. He said extreme weather conditions expected to persist until Tuesday (1/13) could affect the Cities of Manado and Bitung, as well as the Districts of Minahasa, North Minahasa, and South Minahasa.Extreme weather is also forecast to occur in the Districts of North Bolaang Mongondow, Sitaro Islands, Sangihe Islands, and Talaud Islands.According to BMKG, weather conditions in North Sulawesi are being influenced by several factors, including dominant west monsoon winds, a weak La Nina phenomenon, warmer sea surface temperatures, and the spatial movement of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), which contributes to the formation of rain clouds. In addition, cyclonic circulation detected over the Pacific Ocean north of Papua has triggered wind convergence and deflection, potentially increasing rainfall intensity and strong winds. These conditions are further supported by high moisture levels in all atmospheric layers and a high atmospheric instability index.“The combination of these factors is expected to create atmospheric conditions conducive to moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds,” he said.BMKG has urged the public, district and city administrations, as well as the North Sulawesi Provincial Government to enhance vigilance and preparedness, while strengthening coordination with relevant agencies. These measures are considered essential to anticipate hydrometeorological disasters, particularly in areas with steep, mountainous, or cliff-like terrain, as well as regions prone to landslides and flooding.“Given the dynamic nature of weather conditions, the public is advised to continue monitoring weather developments and early warnings issued by the Sam Ratulangi Manado Meteorological Station for each sub-district across North Sulawesi through the official website https://cuaca.bmkg.go.id/, and other information channels,” he said.
