Seoul forum: Indonesia seeks more South Korean industrial capital

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Embassy in Seoul is encouraging high-quality South Korean investment in Indonesia's priority sectors through the Indonesia–Korea Business Forum 2026 to strengthen the strategic industrial partnership between the two nations. The forum, themed “Investing in Indonesia: Advancing Strategic Industrial Partnerships”, brought together representatives from 30 major Korean corporations and industry associations to explore concrete opportunities in high-tech manufacturing, green energy transition, and digital infrastructure.Indonesian Ambassador to South Korea Cecep Herawan said the economic relationship between Indonesia and South Korea is complementary and entering an increasingly strategic phase.”Indonesia is refining its economic policies, but the direction is not toward isolation or nationalization,” Cecep told attendees of the forum, as stated in the press statement released by the Foreign Affairs Ministry on Tuesday.According to Cecep, these policies aim to create a fair, transparent, and competitive investment climate and provide certainty for both domestic and international businesses. He emphasized that Indonesia remains open to foreign investment and views the business world as a key development partner.”We want investors to grow alongside Indonesia as long-term partners in advanced manufacturing, energy transition, and the digital economy. Amid global uncertainty, companies that act early will be best positioned as global markets recover,” the ambassador noted. The forum builds on significant economic momentum, highlighted by a US$10.2 billion business deal and carbon capture and storage (CCS) agreement secured during the Indonesian President's official visit to Seoul in April. The ministry’s Director General of Economic Relations Daniel Tumpal Simanjuntak highlighted Indonesia’s strong investment baseline, noting foreign direct investment (FDI) realization reached $21.4 billion in 2025.He pitched specific high-value targets to South Korean industrialists, including semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, shipbuilding, and small modular reactors (SMR).South Korea’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the push, with Director General of ASEAN Affairs Lee Dong-gy confirming strong interest from Korean firms in electric vehicles, clean energy, and artificial intelligence.South Korean capital has consistently served as a major engine for Indonesian industrialization, backed by streamlined licensing incentives from the Ministry of Investment/BKPM and Bank Indonesia’s Local Currency Transaction (LCT) framework.According to Indonesian Embassy records, South Korean investment in Indonesia reached US$11.45 billion from 2021 to 2025.
