Purbaya backs Destry Damayanti as BI Governor candidate

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa expressed confidence in working alongside Destry Damayanti following her nomination by President Prabowo Subianto as the sole candidate for Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI).”She has quite a lot of experience, and we are quite close,” Purbaya said in Jakarta on Tuesday, when asked about the presidential letter nominating Destry to lead the central bank.Purbaya noted that he and Destry possess a solid track record of professional collaboration, particularly during his tenure as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners at the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS).During that period, Damayanti served as an ex-officio member of the LPS board representing BI.”We usually coordinate and work well together, so there are no issues,” he added.Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto submitted a Presidential Letter (Surpres) to the House of Representatives (DPR RI) proposing Destry Damayanti—currently serving as Acting Governor of BI—as the definitive central bank governor to succeed Perry Warjiyo. The official document was delivered by Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi to DPR RI Speaker Puan Maharani and Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad on Monday (August 10).Destry Damayanti brings over three decades of expertise in economic research, investment strategy, and financial sector governance to the central bank's top leadership post. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Indonesia and a Master of Science in Regional Science from Cornell University. Her career spans influential positions across both public and private sectors, including early academic roles at the University of Indonesia, economic advisory positions for international agencies, Chief Economist at Mandiri Sekuritas (2005–2011), and Chief Economist at Bank Mandiri (2011–2015).In 2015, Damayanti entered institutional financial regulation following her appointment to the Board of Commissioners at the LPS. She subsequently assumed the role of Senior Deputy Governor at BI in July 2019, steering monetary policy and financial system stability through major global disruptions.Following Perry Warjiyo's stepping down last July, Damayanti served as interim central bank governor, positioning her as the primary continuity candidate to lead BI on a permanent basis.
